When Someone Leaves
So Uncle Matt is officially off to live in Dubai. We went over to my folks’ house for a farewell hamburger dinner, and some last-minute razzing and well-wishing. We snapped a few pictures, gave hugs then waved goodbye as he and dad pulled out of the driveway. We all stood a minute and talked about how far Dubai is, but not really so far, and at least there is Skype. We gave a teary-eyed grandma some hugs too, then headed home. In the car on the way home, in the dark silence comes Joseph’s little voice from the back seat, speaking for all of us so eloquently. “It’s sad when someone is here and then they leave.” We nod. It is.
Age Appropriate
Joseph asked me tonight where his stuffed animals were, as he needed them for bed. I explained their location and he ran off to retrieve them.
He found them in the bag I told him they were in. “She was right!” he exclaimed and pulled two of the three out.
Grandpa said, “Joseph, you need two guys for bed? Don’t you think one would be enough?”
“No. Two is appropriate for my age.”
Please Pass the Jacket
Joseph, did you go to see the puppet show at Wolf Trap today?
No, it was cancelled. Again!
Again? Too bad. Did you go there though like last time on the bus?
Yes.
What did you do there then if the show was cancelled?
We sat on the street. On the edge. The, um, the grayish part. And we played pass the jacket.
Pass the jacket?
Yes.
How do you play pass the jacket?
I got the jacket from someone.
Then what did you do with it?
I passed it to someone else!
Let’s Go Somewhere
“Daddy, let’s go somewhere.”
“Where should we go? Should we go to the moon?”
“No.”
“How about Mars?”
“No. We should go somewhere on earth. Somewhere with a foundation.”
